Reduced-Fat Chocolate Sheet Cake
We wanted a sheet cake with great taste and texture but not much fat. Unfortunately, every low-fat recipe we tried was bland, spongy, or dry.
Why This Recipe Works
For a low-fat chocolate sheet cake recipe with great taste and texture, not to mention a creamy frosting, we skipped the low-fat ingredients and limited the butter to just a few tablespoons. Low-fat buttermilk added flavor and moisture that compensated for the missing butter, and cocoa powder took the place of fatty chocolate, while a little chocolate syrup boosted moisture. A serving of traditional homemade chocolate sheet cake with chocolate frosting has 374 calories, 23 grams of fat, and 14 grams of saturated fat. Our Reduced-Fat Chocolate Sheet Cake has 269 calories, 9 grams of fat, and 6 grams of saturated fat per serving.
