Dried Mexican Oregano

Do you really need to keep two types of oregano on hand?

Do you really need to keep two types of oregano on hand?

Most oregano found in the grocery store is grown in Turkey or Greece. It may be labeled “Turkish,” “Greek,” “Mediterranean,” or just plain “oregano.” These varied labels encompass several slightly different varieties of oregano (genus: Origanum) that all come from the same family of plants. Mexican oregano, however, is from an entirely different plant family (Verbenaceae), which happens to be high in carvacol, the essential oil that gives Turkish oregano its characteristic flavor and aroma. Earthy and slightly sweet, real oregano is said to have a milder flavor than the robust, almost spicy Mexican “oregano.” Which brings us to your question. To see if we could really taste the difference, we prepared Italian dressing and marinated chicken kebabs using each. The Mexican oregano was stronger in both, but the difference was minimal. Go ahead and use either. No need to run to the store.
