What is allspice, and is it possible to mix together spices from the cabinet to make a quick substitution?

Allspice is a pea-sized berry from the evergreen pimento tree that grows in tropical climates, such as Jamaica’s. While allspice is often included in savory Caribbean seasonings, such as jerk, it’s better known in the United States as a baking spice. It is most commonly sold ground and tastes like a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves; while numerous sources provide recipes for making allspice from these spices, we didn’t find a mixture that captured its unique “woodsy, sugary, dried fruit” flavor. Allspice definitely deserves its own place in the spice rack.
