A strawberry huller may be just the cure for the paring knife blues when it comes to prepping strawberries.
How We Tested
Hulling strawberries with a paring knife can be tedious. The StemGem Strawberry-Stem Remover by Chef’n ($7.95), resembling a plastic toy strawberry crossed with a syringe, promises to help. To use it, you press the green stem-shaped button to open the four spring-loaded metal prongs at the tip, insert the prongs in the top of the strawberry, and twist while releasing the button. The metal claw closes as you turn your hand, neatly slicing out the leaves, stem, and core in a cone shape that doesn’t sacrifice too much fruit. We gave the gadget to three 9-year-olds who caught on in seconds. It’s easy, safe, fast, compact, and cheap enough to be worth adding to the gadget drawer. (It cores tomatoes as well.)
