Emma Rylander Lane of Clayton, Ala., first published the cake recipe that bears her name in 1898, after it had won the blue ribbon at a country fair in Columbus, Ga. Her cake became nationally famous when it was featured in Harper Lee's 1960 novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.
