Kitchen Disasters

Have a funny story about a recipe gone wrong? We call it a kitchen disaster! We ask our readers to share their stories with us and the letters and e-mails continually roll in. It's nice to know that we aren't the only ones with a disaster (or two) to tell. We especially like this story from Mary Montoya of Couer d'Alene, Idaho...

Smoky Pumpkin Pie

At Thanksgiving I always make pumpkin pies, usually 8 or 10. One Thanksgiving, some 20 years ago, I had this big pot of pumpkin ready for pies. The very last thing I do is add some Southern Comfort into the pumpkin mixture. I took the cap off the bottle, poured in a healthy amount, and suddenly this terrible odor hit my nose. It was certainly not the smell of bourbon. It was the smell of liquid smoke! Well, I immediately knew who the culprits were. At the time my three sons were teenagers. They had thrown a party some time when my husband and I were away and consumed the entire bottle of Southern Comfort. Needless to say, I was one angry Mom. Anyway, I went ahead and baked the pies and guess who had to eat them? Now, all these years later, we still get a big laugh out of it every Thanksgiving.
