Freezer Bags vs. Regular Storage Bags

Besides the price, what is the difference between freezer and regular zipper lock bags?

Besides the price, what is the difference between freezer and regular zipper lock bags?

All of the scientific jargon, registered trademarks, and the sheer volume of choices in the plastic bag aisle can be confusing. Whether they are marketed for the freezer or general storage, all bags are made from the same material: polyethylene. The thickness of the polyethylene film is what differentiates a freezer bag from a regular zipper lock bag.

In general, the thicker the bag, the less likely it is to allow moisture and odors in or out. Freezer bags are intended for long-term storage and over the course of weeks in the freezer, food can lose a significant amount of moisture and take on odors, so a thick bag is best. When comparing prices, always take into account the number of bags in the box. Although they may cost the same, freezer bags tend to come in a 30-count box while the regular storage bags come in a 40-count box.

THE BOTTOM LINE For storing food in the freezer, use freezer bags because they are thicker and thus better at keeping moisture in and odor out. For general storage, freezer bags offer extra protection but regular storage bags are slightly less expensive.
