Grill Baskets

Could grill baskets solve the biggest challenge in grilling fish: sticking?

Published May 1, 2009.

What You Need To Know

Our recipe for foolproof Grilled Salmon Fillets solves the biggest challenge when it comes to grilling fish: sticking. Could grill baskets also do the trick? We gathered three models, priced from $19 to $28.99, and headed outdoors to see if these gadgets actually make grilling fish easier. It quickly became clear that the answer is no. While each had aspects that were appealing, none had the entire package. If the basket did not have a removable handle, it was impossible to close the lid on our gas grill. Baskets whose compartment size couldn’t be adjusted allowed both thick salmon and thinner, smaller fish fillets to shift and slide around too much, tearing the delicate fish or letting it flop when we flipped the basket. But baskets with too tight a grip on the fish crushed fillets before grilling even began. Until manufacturers figure out how to make the perfect basket, we’ll stick to our method of grilling fish.
